FREQUENCY biography

FREQUENCY was formed back in August 1994. Founder members Mark Plant and Jay Tilsley shared a interest in the TV and film scores of the 1960's to the 1980's, as well as a common interest for electronic music in general. The pair decided to create their own 4 track EP on cassette, to be called SOLAR. Having written nearly 20 tracks, the EP soon developed into a full album. 16 of the tracks were selected for the album that was to become REZOLUTION. Only a few cassette copies of REZOLUTION were produced, for friends and family, but interest quickly grew in the project. As a result several duplications runs were manufactured and sold. Proceeds from the sale of the cassettes were donated to the local branch of the NSPCC (National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children).

Following on from the success of REZOLUTION, work immediately started on two follow-up albums, one of which, SANDS OF TIME was released only 4 months later. Two batches of cassettes were produced  and sold out very quickly. Again, the proceeds were donated to the NSPCC. The original third album was sidelined, and not completed until 25 years later - this became NEW WORLDS TO CONQUER! Instead a new album, STORMFORCE was released a month after SANDS OF TIME, in May 1996.

Mutual friend Phil Evans joined the venture in the summer of 1996 during the PERPETUAL MOTION project. Phil has played on the London club circuit in the midst of the 'new romantic' era, as well as peforming with other local bands around North Staffordshire. Phil had similar musical interests to Mark and Jay, and contributed to the writing and recording of new material.

From the Autumn of 1996 to Summer 1997, Mark and Phil worked on a further 3 albums... CHRONOLOGY, ELECTRA, and GEOMETRIX, all in different genres and styles.

NEBULOUS

THE CROWD / OBSESSION / HARVEST

Another new member, Simon Clements joined us in spring 1998, co-writing a number of new tracks and helping complete what was to become the FREEFALL album. In the autumn of 1998, the four of us became scattered geographically across the UK, significantly slowing the pace for new material. We all continued to work independently, each of us offering new tracks to new Frequency album releases.

COLD SUN became the last album to be recorded and produced in our Row Moor Studio.

MOORLANDER became the only written and produced at the home studio in Calton Moor. It was later remastered at Bramcote in Nottinghamshire.

For several years, Jay then led the composition and production, in the form of 3 new albums, HYBRID, OUTER LIMITS and VOYAGER. These made use of new technology and our first ventures into the world of VST.

PERSISTENCE OF MEMORY written and recorded during December 2013 in Stromness, Orkney. Production and mastering was done in our Staffordshire Moorland locations.

OPERATION GRAPPLE

During December 2021 hardware synthesizers and modules were purchased and refurbished. As well as producing tracks with VST technology we're planning a set of albums using the hardware instruments. A new studio is being setup for these projects to commence later this year.

Owing to work and life commitments, Frequency is currently being run as a solo project by Mark.

Work on the brand new album FACADES is ongoing and due for released in the summer of 2024.
